Introduction:

Formply is a structural plywood. It is a technologically advanced and cost-effective solution for construction projects. It is primarily used for concrete formwork, but it has versatile applications. Formply is strong, durable, and moisture resistant.

What is Formply?

Formply is a type of plywood with a laminated face on both sides. The lamination gives additional qualities to Formply, which is not typically seen in standard plywood. The laminated sheets are made of a high-density overlay of impregnated paper bonded to a plywood core.

Plywood is made by glueing several thin sheets of wood together at right angles. This creates a strong sheet of material that doesn’t crack when nails are used and are less likely to shrink or warp during use.

Premium grade phenolic resin is used as a lamination glue to create Formply sheets. As a result, Formply is made using type-A marine bond, the strongest type of plywood bond available. This means that formply is an exceptionally strong plywood.

Formply is a structural plywood, meaning it can be used in projects requiring a strong material. It can be used for construction and other projects where less strength is needed.

The type-A bond glue is formulated to withstand temperature changes and remain strong in wet conditions. This means Formply sheets will not be weakened or become fragile by repeated temperature changes. Its structure will also not be affected by exposure to moisture or even if it is submerged in water.

The Main Characteristics of Formply

1. Meets Australian Standard (AS) 6669

Australian plywood is governed by the AS 6669 standard. Formply as the product is manufactured in compliance with this standard. This assures that Formply will always deliver high performance, even in challenging conditions. AS 6669 is also a structural rating. This means that Formply can be safely used in load-bearing applications.

2. Water resistant

Formply has an additional layer of laminated surface bonded over its plywood core. This makes the sheet moisture-resistant, meaning it can be used for exterior applications. It can be used in areas where it can get wet occasionally, but not suitable enough for areas where it will be constantly exposed to water. Formply is not fully waterproof like marine plywood, but it still has enough durability and resistance to be used in wet areas such as a bathroom or laundry room.

3. Weatherproof

Formply is made with type-A bond glue. This, along with its laminated exterior, makes the product resistant to temperature changes. So, it is immune to repeated heating and cooling and can withstand wind. Furthermore, Formply can also resist UV rays and is suitable for environments with salty water. All of this makes Formply an ideal construction material that can be used in all site locations.

4. Resistant to wear and tear

Formply meets with the compliances of the AS 6669 standard. This means it has superior structural strength and can be used for building supporting structures and related functions. The additional laminated layer protects the plywood core from considerable wear and tear. Thus, Formply has a prolonged life span.

5. Range of colours available

Formply, as a building material, bridges the gap between constructional plywood and architectural plywood. It is available in a range of different colours, meaning it can be used in visible locations. Formply can be used in areas where aesthetic appeal is a priority or where different project parts need to be differentiated using different colours.

Common Applications of Formply

Formply is hugely flexible in its applications. From setting concrete formwork to being used in cabinetry or furniture, Formply has versatile uses.

1. To form a mould for concrete on construction sites

Formply is an ideal surface to hold the concrete in a mould until it sets. Concrete is poured with a Class 2 finish on the first pour for builders. It can be used to generate optimised forms like table or jump forms. Timber and steel frame systems can be used with it.

2. Beams, bridges, and other civil engineering projects

Formply has high structural strength. Additionally, it is waterproof and moisture-resistant. This makes it an ideal choice for civil construction projects as Formply can withstand temperature changes, UV heat, and salty water conditions.

3. Cabinetry, shelving, and furniture

Formply is cheaper than traditional woods and can be used to make furniture, benches, or shelves. It is strong and durable and can also be used for indoor construction projects. Formply also allows customisation thanks to its range of colours and finishes. Furniture made with Formply is a good choice for commercial settings as they offer more durability at lower costs. It is also easy to clean and maintain.
